However, paper bags are not as sustainable as we think. Most paper bags are not recycled. Eighty percent of them end up piled high with the rest of the landfill trash where they are unable to biodegrade without ample exposure to sunlight and oxygen.
Also, recycling paper is not as sustainable as we’ve been told. Consider the resources needed and waste emitted to collect and haul paper bags to the recycling plant, reprocess the paper to produce new bags, and to truck those bags out to the stores.
In fact, paper bags require four times more raw materials and create 50 times more water pollution than plastic bags! There is nothing sustainable about that.
